Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
