Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
